The Cost/Value of Wedding Photography

Last week I saw a Facebook conversation that I was privy to because I was tagged by a friend. It was about the cost of wedding photography and the worth of it, the poster was VERY negative. I didn't respond as it was really none of my business. I did post something about it on MY wall.

What I am posting/sharing with you is not what I said, or the photographer whom I quoted said, which was really good about what we charge and why and the money breakdown of business costs etc...etc... (I will put the link of the other photographer below, it was VERY informative) what I am posting for you to read is what my beautiful sister posted in response! Love you sis!!!

Thanks for posting this Joy! I think it is interesting that people think that these days, because they have such high tech cameras that anyone with a great camera can do what you do. That's asinine. I don't think anyone with the most fabulo...us paint set money could buy could create the Picasso...I remember seeing your full albums for the first time and being awed; I knew you were just not anybody with a camera. It was the first time I wanted to go brag to everyone that my sister was a photographer because of the story you created with your talent.

Your pictures were/are so good that they almost make me want to be that bride and share in that wonderful day with total strangers. Because we are all especially busy and overwhelmed these days, those little moments that you find and you snap in one still moment, capture the beauty that we are too preoccupied to see on any given day!! I love how you take such precious time to get to know your bride, who she is, what she desires/ likes so that on that day, you are not just taking a pretty picture that may end up on the cover of one of the most popular bridal magazine (which you have done, I might add) but more than that, you make them personally relevant, personally intimate for the bride, her spouse and her family.

This is my take on wedding photography: precious are these moments, so much so, that a bride will look back on them and remember how happy that day was, how care free her love was, maybe even how small her waistline was when people wouldn't otherwise believe her. These are the moments that a bride and her spouse will look back at when they have a rough patch and they may be forgetting why they ever tied the knot in the first place. Even for some brides, because life is unpredictable, these could be the last memories they have with a mother, or a father, a friend, even their own husband. These are the captured memories that will be passed down to her children, and her grandchildren and the generations to come, to remember who she was or even learn about her for the first time because they never got to meet her. How would you want them to envision this day?

There is a long list of expenses involved in the cost of a wedding, some of them more expensive than photography. Do any of them cherish this day the way that pictures do...I'd say that's a big fat negative. Most of those things are gone instantly or they walk away in the memory of your guest for maybe a week before the "beautiful wedding" they say you threw becomes forgotten because, guess whose life is most important to them: theirs is!! Shouldn't yours be important to you, especially on your wedding day? Abso-freakin-lutely!!

Daily Shot of JOY! Confetti "Save the Date" shoot!!!

Daily Shot of JOY!
 Confetti!!!!

I decided to pick my picture of the day from a shoot I did yesterday for a "Save The Date"
card for one of my brand new clients!
They came up with the idea of blowing/tossing confetti.
We both assumed we would need LOTS of confetti for MANY tries
and I even brought a broom in case we ran out!
Advice to anyone planning to do a shoot like this...
we took about 100 pictures, which means 100 confetti tosses, and we only used half a bag!

My favorite pick was the first picture that I shot! We got it right on the very first try!

This one ended up being pretty cool too!

We thought it would be fun for them to throw the confetti up into the air...

I loved the way they both looked AFTER the threw up the confetti
so I decided to throw it up for them it this shot!

Loved this one! I am so excited for Chris and Amanda's New Years Eve wedding at The Citizen Hotel...there my not be confetti but it will be a party AND fireworks!!!

I had so much fun on this shoot! I have started a new "Save the Date" photo shoot option. It's a great way  for brides who have the set the date and need to send "saves" out but haven't yet found or committed to a photographer. The shoot start at $50 AND the chance to "trial run" your possible wedding photographer. These "Save the Date" mini sessions are only about a half an hour long, usually in Old Sacramento and produce about 50 picture for you to keep.

Pinterest Wedding Idea of the Day - A Special Guestbook

Pinterest Wedding Idea of the Day - A Special Guestbook

I loved this idea the first moment I saw it!
In a place where you would put a guests book, place a Bible for your guests to circle there favorite verses that mean something to them...as an encouragement for you in your new marriage.
Make SURE you put very visible instructions next to it. An even better idea would be to have a actual guest book attendant...since writing in a bible (that is NOT yours) is not what you would think of doing!

Ashley and John's FULL Wedding on the blog!!!

Here is the wedding of Ashley and John at the beautiful Grace Vineyards in Galt.
It is one of my favorite weddings all year. So here we go...starting off with the beginning of the day...

Ashley getting ready...I LOVE make-up pictures...

Introducing Ashley...

I love this picture...these are Ashley's vows written down...

Shoes, jewelry and the garter...

And the beautiful dress...

Ashley getting dressed...

Shoes and garter time...

I love these next few pictures. Each one of Ashley's friends/family helped her with some part of her jewelry...

This picture is of the grooms twin sister helping Ashley with her bracelet...

This is Ashley's sister putting on her necklace...yes...she is crying...

This is the grooms mother...

Here are Ashley's beautiful formals...

And the girls...

And the little girls...

Here is the groom arriving...and his momma watching...
(all groom getting ready and guy formals taken by 2nd photographer Dina)

John and his mom...

Here are John's and the guys formals...

Back to the ladies...they are saying a prayer before walking Ashley down the isle...

The littles playing...

We of course always take picture of the groom walking down the aisle...
BUT sometimes they don't make the blog! I had to include these...

LOVE these...

Back in the bridal room, I am hanging out with Ashley and her parents who will both walk her down the aisle. I love these next few pictures...the emotion is truly captured...especially, don't miss the third one from this, dads hands on Ashley's arm...just beautiful!

Here we go...I will let these ceremony pictures tell their own story...

The bride and groom walking back down the aisle together for me...is the best picture of the day...it is the most honest and real.

I thought this was so cute!!! They had a big hug circle!!!

Here is the whole wedding party...

I always get asked to do these bride with guys and groom with girls pictures, I personally don't care for them...but then we do this...and get this...who doesn't love these! LOL

Here are the bride and groom formals in front of the barn doors...I love this backdrop. This is what I call the INTERACTION part of wedding formals. There is very little direction...you are just suppose to do what you do...and we just snap, snap, snap!!!

I love the front of Grace Vineyards...just stunning brick and the white doors...

Then we moved over to the vineyard to take a few pictures...

The vineyards is set right in front of a golf course...we took our last set of pictures there...

I love the look of the reception...

This was a very different and cute way to be introduced...

Some of my favorite pictures of this entire wedding were the First Dance Pictures...

AND this one is my FAVORITES!!!

Cuties...

Father Daughter dance...

Mother son dance...

The cake...

Both tosses...

\

And that just about covers the whole the day!!!

Thank you for checking out this post!

Happy Wedding Planning!!!
