Here is their story in Chelsea's own words...
Chelsea
first saw Ben on the playground in, when they were 9 years old. Chelsea
remembers he was surrounded by a group of little girls and he had no
idea that she had instantly decided she was going to marry him in that
very moment even though he had no idea who she was. Chelsea went home
that day in August of 2003 and told her grandma that day that she was
going to marry Ben Mammet. Chelsea spent the remainder of elementary
school walking her dog around the block by Ben's house, two streets over
from hers, and doodling Chelsea Mammet on all her school folders.
Chelsea
remembers there was a pencil that Ben let he borrow and she used it
until the 5th grade! She would also bribe friends to ask who Ben liked
or if he liked her, not much information came back. Through middle
school, this same routine continued, but Chelsea began to take a look at
the young man he was becoming. She saw that he was compassionate with
his siblings, how soft spoken he was and he had a heart for the Lord,
which was very important to Chelsea.
In
high school Ben and Chelsea had their first class together. She decided
to try to make Ben jealous by sitting in his desk talking very loudly
about other boys that where trying to date her. He made a negative
comment about the boys that she had mentioned, Chelsea then walked
around for a month telling everyone that Ben talked to her!
The
summer following 9th grade, she had just about resolved to giving up
her SEVEN year dream of marrying Ben Mammet!!! Then one day they both
happened to meet at Jamba Juice with a mutual friend, they were now 15.
Ben and Chelsea were left alone awkwardly at the table in Jamba Juice
and their very first conversation began with a winning phrase from
Chelsea "Sooooo, you have braces huh?" The conversation didn't end until
5 hours later. But before it ended Ben invited Chelsea to his 16th
birthday party to following weekend. They spend the rest of the summer
together.
The
first day back to school, August 16 (also their wedding date), Ben
walked Chelsea home from school and asked her to be his girlfriend. She
said, "Yea." Ben was so excited she said yes he ran home in the wrong
direction and Chelsea called everyone she knew to share the news!
Their
first kiss was shared two months later on the roof of Ben's house
looking at the stars. It was Chelsea's first kiss EVER and she became
dizzy and almost slipped off the roof! Ben gave Chelsea a promise ring a
year the next year on August 16 when they were 17, promising to marry
her one day.
On
June 22, 2013, Ben proposed to Chelsea by the Sacramento River an hour
before the River Cats game ended and fireworks went off as the watched.
The engagement ring that Ben proposed with has a story behind it.
Chelsea's real dad, who passed away when Chelsea was a toddler had given
her mother a promise ring before they were married. Chelsea's mother
gave it to Chelsea as a purity ring. Ben added a diamond in it as an
engagement ring, and had a band designed as a wedding band to match it
by the same jeweler who had designed the original ring with her father.
